In 1948, Virginia awarded its 11 electoral votes to Truman of the Democratic party. That placed Virginia with the eventual winner: Harry S. Truman went on to take the presidency, and Virginia was part of his column.

Virginia stayed in the Democratic column for the 5th straight cycle, extending a run that began in 1932. The region divided — North Carolina, Tennessee, Kentucky, and West Virginia joined Virginia for the Democratic ticket, while Maryland did not. Over its 58 recorded presidential cycles, Virginia has backed the Democratic party more than any other — 33 times in all. The vote fell within the New Deal Coalition — FDR, civil rights, and the long Democratic majority.

Nationally, Harry S. Truman finished with 303 of the 531 electoral votes to Thomas E. Dewey's 189. Harry S. Truman led the national popular vote with 49.55% of the ballots cast.
