1952
What happened in Massachusetts, 1952
In 1952, Massachusetts awarded its 16 electoral votes to Eisenhower of the Republican party. That placed Massachusetts with the eventual winner: Dwight D. Eisenhower went on to take the presidency, and Massachusetts was part of his column.
The result flipped Massachusetts away from the Democratic ticket it had backed in each of the previous 5 cycles. The region divided — Connecticut, New York, Vermont, and New Hampshire joined Massachusetts for the Republican ticket, while Rhode Island did not. Over its 60 recorded presidential cycles, Massachusetts has backed the Democratic party more than any other — 23 times in all. The vote fell within the New Deal Coalition — FDR, civil rights, and the long Democratic majority.
Nationally, Dwight D. Eisenhower finished with 442 of the 531 electoral votes to Adlai Stevenson II's 89. Dwight D. Eisenhower led the national popular vote with 55.18% of the ballots cast.
