Massachusetts in 1936

The 1936 contest saw Massachusetts line up behind Roosevelt, delivering 17 electoral votes to the Democratic ticket. That placed Massachusetts with the eventual winner: Franklin D. Roosevelt went on to take the presidency, and Massachusetts was part of his column.

Massachusetts stayed in the Democratic column for the 2nd straight cycle, extending a run that began in 1932. The region divided — Rhode Island, Connecticut, New York, and New Hampshire joined Massachusetts for the Democratic ticket, while Vermont did not. Over its 60 recorded presidential cycles, Massachusetts has backed the Democratic party more than any other — 23 times in all. The vote fell within the New Deal Coalition — FDR, civil rights, and the long Democratic majority.

Nationally, Franklin D. Roosevelt finished with 523 of the 531 electoral votes to Alf Landon's 8. Franklin D. Roosevelt led the national popular vote with 60.8% of the ballots cast.
