In 1928, Massachusetts awarded its 18 electoral votes to Hoover of the Republican party. Massachusetts ended up on the winning side — Herbert Hoover captured the White House that year.

It marked the 4th consecutive election in which Massachusetts backed the Republican party, a streak reaching back to 1916. The region divided — Connecticut, New York, Vermont, and New Hampshire joined Massachusetts for the Republican ticket, while Rhode Island did not. Across the 60 presidential elections Massachusetts has taken part in, it has most often sided with the Democratic party (23 times). The vote fell within the Roaring Twenties — Republican dominance to the Great Depression.

In the national count, Herbert Hoover took 444 of the 531 electoral votes, against Al Smith's 87. Herbert Hoover led the national popular vote with 58.21% of the ballots cast.
