Oklahoma in 1936

The 1936 contest saw Oklahoma line up behind Roosevelt, delivering 11 electoral votes to the Democratic ticket. That placed Oklahoma with the eventual winner: Franklin D. Roosevelt went on to take the presidency, and Oklahoma was part of his column.

Oklahoma stayed in the Democratic column for the 2nd straight cycle, extending a run that began in 1932. The region divided — Missouri, Arkansas, Texas, New Mexico, and Colorado joined Oklahoma for the Democratic ticket, while Kansas did not. Over its 30 recorded presidential cycles, Oklahoma has backed the Republican party more than any other — 20 times in all. The vote fell within the New Deal Coalition — FDR, civil rights, and the long Democratic majority.

Nationally, Franklin D. Roosevelt finished with 523 of the 531 electoral votes to Alf Landon's 8. Franklin D. Roosevelt led the national popular vote with 60.8% of the ballots cast.
