In 1940, Oklahoma awarded its 11 electoral votes to Roosevelt of the Democratic party. Oklahoma ended up on the winning side — Franklin D. Roosevelt captured the White House that year.

It marked the 3rd consecutive election in which Oklahoma backed the Democratic party, a streak reaching back to 1932. The region divided — Missouri, Arkansas, Texas, New Mexico, and Colorado joined Oklahoma for the Democratic ticket, while Kansas did not. Across the 30 presidential elections Oklahoma has taken part in, it has most often sided with the Republican party (20 times). The vote fell within the New Deal Coalition — FDR, civil rights, and the long Democratic majority.

In the national count, Franklin D. Roosevelt took 449 of the 531 electoral votes, against Wendell Willkie's 82. Franklin D. Roosevelt led the national popular vote with 54.74% of the ballots cast.
