Virginia in 1920

The 1920 contest saw Virginia line up behind Cox, delivering 12 electoral votes to the Democratic ticket. The presidency went elsewhere: Warren G. Harding (Republican) won nationally, while Virginia had backed a different ticket.

Virginia stayed in the Democratic column for the 13th straight cycle, extending a run that began in 1872. It stood apart from its neighbors: North Carolina, Tennessee, Kentucky, West Virginia, and Maryland went the other way that year. Over its 58 recorded presidential cycles, Virginia has backed the Democratic party more than any other — 33 times in all. The vote fell within the Roaring Twenties — Republican dominance to the Great Depression.

Nationally, Warren G. Harding finished with 404 of the 531 electoral votes to James M. Cox's 127. Warren G. Harding led the national popular vote with 60.32% of the ballots cast.
