1912
Massachusetts in 1912
The 1912 contest saw Massachusetts line up behind Wilson, delivering 18 electoral votes to the Democratic ticket. That placed Massachusetts with the eventual winner: Woodrow Wilson went on to take the presidency, and Massachusetts was part of his column.
The result flipped Massachusetts away from the Republican ticket it had backed in each of the previous 14 cycles. The region divided — Rhode Island, Connecticut, New York, and New Hampshire joined Massachusetts for the Democratic ticket, while Vermont did not. Over its 60 recorded presidential cycles, Massachusetts has backed the Democratic party more than any other — 23 times in all. The vote fell within the Progressive Era — Trust-busting, suffrage, and World War I.
Nationally, Woodrow Wilson finished with 435 of the 531 electoral votes to Theodore Roosevelt's 88. Woodrow Wilson led the national popular vote with 41.84% of the ballots cast.
