Virginia in 1908

The 1908 contest saw Virginia line up behind Bryan, delivering 12 electoral votes to the Democratic ticket. The presidency went elsewhere: William Howard Taft (Republican) won nationally, while Virginia had backed a different ticket.

Virginia stayed in the Democratic column for the 10th straight cycle, extending a run that began in 1872. The region divided — North Carolina, Tennessee, Kentucky, and Maryland joined Virginia for the Democratic ticket, while West Virginia did not. Over its 58 recorded presidential cycles, Virginia has backed the Democratic party more than any other — 33 times in all. The vote fell within the Progressive Era — Trust-busting, suffrage, and World War I.

Nationally, William Howard Taft finished with 321 of the 483 electoral votes to William Jennings Bryan's 162. William Howard Taft led the national popular vote with 51.57% of the ballots cast.
