In 1900, Virginia awarded its 12 electoral votes to Bryan of the Democratic party. The presidency went elsewhere: William McKinley (Republican) won nationally, while Virginia had backed a different ticket.

Virginia stayed in the Democratic column for the 8th straight cycle, extending a run that began in 1872. The region divided — North Carolina, Tennessee, Kentucky, and Maryland joined Virginia for the Democratic ticket, while West Virginia did not. Over its 58 recorded presidential cycles, Virginia has backed the Democratic party more than any other — 33 times in all. The vote fell within the Progressive Era — Trust-busting, suffrage, and World War I.

Nationally, William McKinley finished with 292 of the 447 electoral votes to William Jennings Bryan's 155. William McKinley led the national popular vote with 51.64% of the ballots cast.
