In 1916, Ohio awarded its 24 electoral votes to Wilson of the Democratic party. Ohio ended up on the winning side — Woodrow Wilson captured the White House that year.

It marked the 2nd consecutive election in which Ohio backed the Democratic party, a streak reaching back to 1912. The region divided — Indiana and Kentucky joined Ohio for the Democratic ticket, while Michigan, West Virginia, and Pennsylvania did not. Across the 56 presidential elections Ohio has taken part in, it has most often sided with the Republican party (30 times). The vote fell within the Progressive Era — Trust-busting, suffrage, and World War I.

In the national count, Woodrow Wilson took 277 of the 531 electoral votes, against Charles Evans Hughes's 254. Woodrow Wilson led the national popular vote with 49.24% of the ballots cast.
