What happened in Missouri, 1872

In 1872, Missouri awarded its 15 electoral votes to Greeley of the Democratic party. Nationally the result broke the other way — Ulysses S. Grant (Republican) won the presidency, leaving Missouri among the states he did not carry.

Greeley's win closed out Missouri's 2-election run of voting Republican. The region divided — Kentucky and Tennessee joined Missouri for the Democratic ticket, while Iowa, Illinois, Arkansas, Kansas, and Nebraska did not.
