Missouri backed Lincoln (Republican) in the 1864 presidential election, casting 11 electoral votes for the ticket. That placed Missouri with the eventual winner: Abraham Lincoln went on to take the presidency, and Missouri was part of his column.
The result flipped Missouri away from the Democratic ticket it had backed in each of the previous 9 cycles. The region divided — Iowa, Illinois, and Kansas joined Missouri for the Republican ticket, while Kentucky did not. Over its 52 recorded presidential cycles, Missouri has backed the Democratic party more than any other — 33 times in all. The vote fell within the Civil War — Lincoln, war, and Reconstruction begins.
Nationally, Abraham Lincoln finished with 212 of the 233 electoral votes to George B. McClellan's 21. Abraham Lincoln led the national popular vote with 55.03% of the ballots cast.
