The 1868 contest saw Missouri line up behind Grant, delivering 11 electoral votes to the Republican ticket. That placed Missouri with the eventual winner: Ulysses S. Grant went on to take the presidency, and Missouri was part of his column.

Missouri stayed in the Republican column for the 2nd straight cycle, extending a run that began in 1864. The region divided — Iowa, Illinois, Tennessee, Arkansas, Kansas, and Nebraska joined Missouri for the Republican ticket, while Kentucky did not. Over its 52 recorded presidential cycles, Missouri has backed the Democratic party more than any other — 33 times in all. The vote fell within the Reconstruction — Republican rule and contested returns.

Nationally, Ulysses S. Grant finished with 214 of the 294 electoral votes to Horatio Seymour's 80. Ulysses S. Grant led the national popular vote with 52.66% of the ballots cast.
