1860
What happened in Missouri, 1860
In 1860, Missouri awarded its 9 electoral votes to Douglas of the Democratic party. The presidency went elsewhere: Abraham Lincoln (Republican) won nationally, while Missouri had backed a different ticket.
Missouri stayed in the Democratic column for the 9th straight cycle, extending a run that began in 1828. It stood apart from its neighbors: Iowa, Illinois, Kentucky, Tennessee, and Arkansas went the other way that year. Over its 52 recorded presidential cycles, Missouri has backed the Democratic party more than any other — 33 times in all. The vote fell within the Civil War — Lincoln, war, and Reconstruction begins.
Nationally, Abraham Lincoln finished with 180 of the 303 electoral votes to John C. Breckinridge's 72. Abraham Lincoln led the national popular vote with 39.65% of the ballots cast.
