2016
What happened in Texas, 2016
In 2016, Texas awarded its 38 electoral votes to Trump of the Republican party. That placed Texas with the eventual winner: Donald Trump went on to take the presidency, and Texas was part of his column.
Texas stayed in the Republican column for the 10th straight cycle, extending a run that began in 1980. The region divided — Oklahoma, Arkansas, and Louisiana joined Texas for the Republican ticket, while New Mexico did not. Over its 44 recorded presidential cycles, Texas has backed the Democratic party more than any other — 28 times in all. The vote fell within the Modern Polarization — Close elections in a divided country.
Nationally, Donald Trump finished with 304 of the 538 electoral votes to Hillary Clinton's 227. Though Donald Trump won the Electoral College, Hillary Clinton drew more of the national popular vote — 48.18% to 46.09%.
