In 2004, Texas awarded its 34 electoral votes to Bush of the Republican party. Texas ended up on the winning side — George W. Bush captured the White House that year.

It marked the 7th consecutive election in which Texas backed the Republican party, a streak reaching back to 1980. Texas did not move alone — neighboring New Mexico, Oklahoma, Arkansas, and Louisiana broke the same way in 2004.
