The 2000 contest saw Texas line up behind Bush, delivering 32 electoral votes to the Republican ticket. Texas ended up on the winning side — George W. Bush captured the White House that year.

It marked the 6th consecutive election in which Texas backed the Republican party, a streak reaching back to 1980. The region divided — Oklahoma, Arkansas, and Louisiana joined Texas for the Republican ticket, while New Mexico did not. Across the 44 presidential elections Texas has taken part in, it has most often sided with the Democratic party (28 times). The vote fell within the Modern Polarization — Close elections in a divided country.

In the national count, George W. Bush took 271 of the 538 electoral votes, against Al Gore's 266. Though George W. Bush won the Electoral College, Al Gore drew more of the national popular vote — 48.38% to 47.87%.
