The 2016 contest saw Indiana line up behind Trump, delivering 11 electoral votes to the Republican ticket. Indiana ended up on the winning side — Donald Trump captured the White House that year.

It marked the 2nd consecutive election in which Indiana backed the Republican party, a streak reaching back to 2012. The region divided — Kentucky, Ohio, and Michigan joined Indiana for the Republican ticket, while Illinois did not. Across the 53 presidential elections Indiana has taken part in, it has most often sided with the Republican party (32 times). The vote fell within the Modern Polarization — Close elections in a divided country.

In the national count, Donald Trump took 304 of the 538 electoral votes, against Hillary Clinton's 227. Though Donald Trump won the Electoral College, Hillary Clinton drew more of the national popular vote — 48.18% to 46.09%.
