In 2008, Indiana awarded its 11 electoral votes to Obama of the Democratic party. That placed Indiana with the eventual winner: Barack Obama went on to take the presidency, and Indiana was part of his column.

The result flipped Indiana away from the Republican ticket it had backed in each of the previous 10 cycles. The region divided — Illinois, Ohio, and Michigan joined Indiana for the Democratic ticket, while Kentucky did not. Over its 53 recorded presidential cycles, Indiana has backed the Republican party more than any other — 32 times in all.
