In 2012, Maryland awarded its 10 electoral votes to Obama of the Democratic party. Maryland ended up on the winning side — Barack Obama captured the White House that year.

It marked the 7th consecutive election in which Maryland backed the Democratic party, a streak reaching back to 1988. The region divided — Virginia, Pennsylvania, Delaware, and District of Columbia joined Maryland for the Democratic ticket, while West Virginia did not. Across the 60 presidential elections Maryland has taken part in, it has most often sided with the Democratic party (34 times).
