The 1996 contest saw Maryland line up behind Clinton, delivering 10 electoral votes to the Democratic ticket. Maryland ended up on the winning side — Bill Clinton captured the White House that year.

It marked the 3rd consecutive election in which Maryland backed the Democratic party, a streak reaching back to 1988. The region divided — West Virginia, Pennsylvania, Delaware, and District of Columbia joined Maryland for the Democratic ticket, while Virginia did not. Across the 60 presidential elections Maryland has taken part in, it has most often sided with the Democratic party (34 times). The vote fell within the Modern Polarization — Close elections in a divided country.

In the national count, Bill Clinton took 379 of the 538 electoral votes, against Bob Dole's 159. Bill Clinton led the national popular vote with 49.23% of the ballots cast.
