In 2024, Maryland awarded its 10 electoral votes to Harris of the Democratic party. The presidency went elsewhere: Donald Trump (Republican) won nationally, while Maryland had backed a different ticket.
Maryland stayed in the Democratic column for the 10th straight cycle, extending a run that began in 1988. The region divided — Virginia, Delaware, and District of Columbia joined Maryland for the Democratic ticket, while West Virginia and Pennsylvania did not. Over its 60 recorded presidential cycles, Maryland has backed the Democratic party more than any other — 34 times in all. The vote fell within the Modern Polarization — Close elections in a divided country.
Nationally, Donald Trump finished with 312 of the 538 electoral votes to Kamala Harris's 226. Donald Trump led the national popular vote with 49.8% of the ballots cast.
