2012
What happened in Colorado, 2012
In 2012, Colorado awarded its 9 electoral votes to Obama of the Democratic party. That placed Colorado with the eventual winner: Barack Obama went on to take the presidency, and Colorado was part of his column.
Colorado stayed in the Democratic column for the 2nd straight cycle, extending a run that began in 2008. The region divided — New Mexico joined Colorado for the Democratic ticket, while Wyoming, Nebraska, Kansas, Oklahoma, Arizona, and Utah did not. Over its 37 recorded presidential cycles, Colorado has backed the Republican party more than any other — 19 times in all. The vote fell within the Modern Polarization — Close elections in a divided country.
Nationally, Barack Obama finished with 332 of the 538 electoral votes to Mitt Romney's 206. Barack Obama led the national popular vote with 51.06% of the ballots cast.
