In 2000, Colorado awarded its 8 electoral votes to Bush of the Republican party. Colorado ended up on the winning side — George W. Bush captured the White House that year.

It marked the 2nd consecutive election in which Colorado backed the Republican party, a streak reaching back to 1996. The region divided — Wyoming, Nebraska, Kansas, Oklahoma, Arizona, and Utah joined Colorado for the Republican ticket, while New Mexico did not.
