1996
Colorado in 1996
The 1996 contest saw Colorado line up behind Dole, delivering 8 electoral votes to the Republican ticket. The presidency went elsewhere: Bill Clinton (Democratic) won nationally, while Colorado had backed a different ticket.
The result flipped Colorado away from the Democratic it had supported in 1992. The region divided — Wyoming, Nebraska, Kansas, Oklahoma, Arizona, and Utah joined Colorado for the Republican ticket, while New Mexico did not. Over its 37 recorded presidential cycles, Colorado has backed the Republican party more than any other — 19 times in all. The vote fell within the Modern Polarization — Close elections in a divided country.
Nationally, Bill Clinton finished with 379 of the 538 electoral votes to Bob Dole's 159. Bill Clinton led the national popular vote with 49.23% of the ballots cast.
