1964
What happened in Ohio, 1964
In 1964, Ohio awarded its 26 electoral votes to Johnson of the Democratic party. That placed Ohio with the eventual winner: Lyndon B. Johnson went on to take the presidency, and Ohio was part of his column.
The result flipped Ohio away from the Republican ticket it had backed in each of the previous 3 cycles. Ohio did not move alone — neighboring Michigan, Indiana, Kentucky, West Virginia, and Pennsylvania broke the same way in 1964. Over its 56 recorded presidential cycles, Ohio has backed the Republican party more than any other — 30 times in all. The vote fell within the New Deal Coalition — FDR, civil rights, and the long Democratic majority.
Nationally, Lyndon B. Johnson finished with 486 of the 538 electoral votes to Barry Goldwater's 52. Lyndon B. Johnson led the national popular vote with 61.05% of the ballots cast.
