Ohio backed Eisenhower (Republican) in the 1956 presidential election, casting 25 electoral votes for the ticket. Ohio ended up on the winning side — Dwight D. Eisenhower captured the White House that year.

It marked the 2nd consecutive election in which Ohio backed the Republican party, a streak reaching back to 1952. The region divided — Michigan, Indiana, and Pennsylvania joined Ohio for the Republican ticket, while Kentucky and West Virginia did not. Across the 56 presidential elections Ohio has taken part in, it has most often sided with the Republican party (30 times).
