Ohio in 1960

The 1960 contest saw Ohio line up behind Nixon, delivering 25 electoral votes to the Republican ticket. The presidency went elsewhere: John F. Kennedy (Democratic) won nationally, while Ohio had backed a different ticket.

Ohio stayed in the Republican column for the 3rd straight cycle, extending a run that began in 1952. The region divided — Indiana joined Ohio for the Republican ticket, while Michigan, Kentucky, West Virginia, and Pennsylvania did not. Over its 56 recorded presidential cycles, Ohio has backed the Republican party more than any other — 30 times in all. The vote fell within the New Deal Coalition — FDR, civil rights, and the long Democratic majority.

Nationally, John F. Kennedy finished with 303 of the 537 electoral votes to Richard Nixon's 219. John F. Kennedy led the national popular vote with 49.72% of the ballots cast.
