Ohio in 1948

The 1948 contest saw Ohio line up behind Truman, delivering 25 electoral votes to the Democratic ticket. That placed Ohio with the eventual winner: Harry S. Truman went on to take the presidency, and Ohio was part of his column.

Ohio stayed in the Democratic column for the 5th straight cycle, extending a run that began in 1932. The region divided — Kentucky and West Virginia joined Ohio for the Democratic ticket, while Michigan, Indiana, and Pennsylvania did not. Over its 56 recorded presidential cycles, Ohio has backed the Republican party more than any other — 30 times in all. The vote fell within the New Deal Coalition — FDR, civil rights, and the long Democratic majority.

Nationally, Harry S. Truman finished with 303 of the 531 electoral votes to Thomas E. Dewey's 189. Harry S. Truman led the national popular vote with 49.55% of the ballots cast.
