1976
What happened in North Carolina, 1976
In 1976, North Carolina awarded its 13 electoral votes to Carter of the Democratic party. North Carolina ended up on the winning side — Jimmy Carter captured the White House that year.
Carter's win closed out North Carolina's 2-election run of voting Republican. The region divided — Tennessee, Georgia, and South Carolina joined North Carolina for the Democratic ticket, while Virginia did not. Across the 58 presidential elections North Carolina has taken part in, it has most often sided with the Democratic party (32 times). The vote fell within the Cold War Realignment — Nixon, Reagan, and the Republican South.
In the national count, Jimmy Carter took 297 of the 538 electoral votes, against Gerald Ford's 240. Jimmy Carter led the national popular vote with 50.08% of the ballots cast.
