What happened in Florida, 1952

In 1952, Florida awarded its 10 electoral votes to Eisenhower of the Republican party. That placed Florida with the eventual winner: Dwight D. Eisenhower went on to take the presidency, and Florida was part of his column.

The result flipped Florida away from the Democratic ticket it had backed in each of the previous 5 cycles. It stood apart from its neighbors: Alabama and Georgia went the other way that year. Over its 45 recorded presidential cycles, Florida has backed the Democratic party more than any other — 28 times in all. The vote fell within the New Deal Coalition — FDR, civil rights, and the long Democratic majority.

Nationally, Dwight D. Eisenhower finished with 442 of the 531 electoral votes to Adlai Stevenson II's 89. Dwight D. Eisenhower led the national popular vote with 55.18% of the ballots cast.
