Florida in 1960

The 1960 contest saw Florida line up behind Nixon, delivering 10 electoral votes to the Republican ticket. Nationally the result broke the other way — John F. Kennedy (Democratic) won the presidency, leaving Florida among the states he did not carry.

The result flipped Florida away from the Democratic it had supported in 1956. It stood apart from its neighbors: Alabama and Georgia went the other way that year. Across the 45 presidential elections Florida has taken part in, it has most often sided with the Democratic party (28 times). The vote fell within the New Deal Coalition — FDR, civil rights, and the long Democratic majority.

In the national count, John F. Kennedy took 303 of the 537 electoral votes, against Richard Nixon's 219. John F. Kennedy led the national popular vote with 49.72% of the ballots cast.
