Reading the 1956 result in Florida

Florida backed Stevenson (Democratic) in the 1956 presidential election, casting 10 electoral votes for the ticket. The presidency went elsewhere: Dwight D. Eisenhower (Republican) won nationally, while Florida had backed a different ticket.

The result flipped Florida away from the Republican it had supported in 1952. Florida did not move alone — neighboring Alabama and Georgia broke the same way in 1956. Over its 45 recorded presidential cycles, Florida has backed the Democratic party more than any other — 28 times in all. The vote fell within the New Deal Coalition — FDR, civil rights, and the long Democratic majority.

Nationally, Dwight D. Eisenhower finished with 457 of the 531 electoral votes to Adlai Stevenson II's 73. Dwight D. Eisenhower led the national popular vote with 57.37% of the ballots cast.
