What happened in Utah, 1948

In 1948, Utah awarded its 4 electoral votes to Truman of the Democratic party. That placed Utah with the eventual winner: Harry S. Truman went on to take the presidency, and Utah was part of his column.

Utah stayed in the Democratic column for the 5th straight cycle, extending a run that began in 1932. Utah did not move alone — neighboring Idaho, Wyoming, Colorado, New Mexico, Arizona, and Nevada broke the same way in 1948. Over its 33 recorded presidential cycles, Utah has backed the Republican party more than any other — 23 times in all. The vote fell within the New Deal Coalition — FDR, civil rights, and the long Democratic majority.

Nationally, Harry S. Truman finished with 303 of the 531 electoral votes to Thomas E. Dewey's 189. Harry S. Truman led the national popular vote with 49.55% of the ballots cast.
