Utah in 1968

The 1968 contest saw Utah line up behind Nixon, delivering 4 electoral votes to the Republican ticket. That placed Utah with the eventual winner: Richard Nixon went on to take the presidency, and Utah was part of his column.

The result flipped Utah away from the Democratic it had supported in 1964. Utah did not move alone — neighboring Idaho, Wyoming, Colorado, New Mexico, Arizona, and Nevada broke the same way in 1968. Over its 33 recorded presidential cycles, Utah has backed the Republican party more than any other — 23 times in all. The vote fell within the Cold War Realignment — Nixon, Reagan, and the Republican South.

Nationally, Richard Nixon finished with 301 of the 538 electoral votes to Hubert Humphrey's 191. Richard Nixon led the national popular vote with 43.42% of the ballots cast.
