What happened in Utah, 1960

In 1960, Utah awarded its 4 electoral votes to Nixon of the Republican party. The presidency went elsewhere: John F. Kennedy (Democratic) won nationally, while Utah had backed a different ticket.

Utah stayed in the Republican column for the 3rd straight cycle, extending a run that began in 1952. The region divided — Idaho, Colorado, and Arizona joined Utah for the Republican ticket, while Wyoming, New Mexico, and Nevada did not. Over its 33 recorded presidential cycles, Utah has backed the Republican party more than any other — 23 times in all. The vote fell within the New Deal Coalition — FDR, civil rights, and the long Democratic majority.

Nationally, John F. Kennedy finished with 303 of the 537 electoral votes to Richard Nixon's 219. John F. Kennedy led the national popular vote with 49.72% of the ballots cast.
