In 1948, California awarded its 25 electoral votes to Truman of the Democratic party. California ended up on the winning side — Harry S. Truman captured the White House that year.

It marked the 5th consecutive election in which California backed the Democratic party, a streak reaching back to 1932. The region divided — Nevada and Arizona joined California for the Democratic ticket, while Oregon did not. Across the 44 presidential elections California has taken part in, it has most often sided with the Republican party (22 times). The vote fell within the New Deal Coalition — FDR, civil rights, and the long Democratic majority.

In the national count, Harry S. Truman took 303 of the 531 electoral votes, against Thomas E. Dewey's 189. Harry S. Truman led the national popular vote with 49.55% of the ballots cast.
