California in 1932

The 1932 contest saw California line up behind Roosevelt, delivering 22 electoral votes to the Democratic ticket. That placed California with the eventual winner: Franklin D. Roosevelt went on to take the presidency, and California was part of his column.

The result flipped California away from the Republican ticket it had backed in each of the previous 3 cycles. California did not move alone — neighboring Oregon, Nevada, and Arizona broke the same way in 1932. Over its 44 recorded presidential cycles, California has backed the Republican party more than any other — 22 times in all. The vote fell within the New Deal Coalition — FDR, civil rights, and the long Democratic majority.

Nationally, Franklin D. Roosevelt finished with 472 of the 531 electoral votes to Herbert Hoover's 59. Franklin D. Roosevelt led the national popular vote with 57.41% of the ballots cast.
