California in 1956

The 1956 contest saw California line up behind Eisenhower, delivering 32 electoral votes to the Republican ticket. That placed California with the eventual winner: Dwight D. Eisenhower went on to take the presidency, and California was part of his column.

California stayed in the Republican column for the 2nd straight cycle, extending a run that began in 1952. California did not move alone — neighboring Oregon, Nevada, and Arizona broke the same way in 1956. Over its 44 recorded presidential cycles, California has backed the Republican party more than any other — 22 times in all. The vote fell within the New Deal Coalition — FDR, civil rights, and the long Democratic majority.

Nationally, Dwight D. Eisenhower finished with 457 of the 531 electoral votes to Adlai Stevenson II's 73. Dwight D. Eisenhower led the national popular vote with 57.37% of the ballots cast.
