What happened in California, 1936

In 1936, California awarded its 22 electoral votes to Roosevelt of the Democratic party. That placed California with the eventual winner: Franklin D. Roosevelt went on to take the presidency, and California was part of his column.

California stayed in the Democratic column for the 2nd straight cycle, extending a run that began in 1932. California did not move alone — neighboring Oregon, Nevada, and Arizona broke the same way in 1936. Over its 44 recorded presidential cycles, California has backed the Republican party more than any other — 22 times in all. The vote fell within the New Deal Coalition — FDR, civil rights, and the long Democratic majority.

Nationally, Franklin D. Roosevelt finished with 523 of the 531 electoral votes to Alf Landon's 8. Franklin D. Roosevelt led the national popular vote with 60.8% of the ballots cast.
