North Carolina in 1924

The 1924 contest saw North Carolina line up behind Davis, delivering 12 electoral votes to the Democratic ticket. The presidency went elsewhere: Calvin Coolidge (Republican) won nationally, while North Carolina had backed a different ticket.

The result flipped North Carolina away from the Republican it had supported in 1920. North Carolina did not move alone — neighboring Virginia, Tennessee, Georgia, and South Carolina broke the same way in 1924. Over its 58 recorded presidential cycles, North Carolina has backed the Democratic party more than any other — 32 times in all. The vote fell within the Roaring Twenties — Republican dominance to the Great Depression.

Nationally, Calvin Coolidge finished with 382 of the 531 electoral votes to John W. Davis's 136. Calvin Coolidge led the national popular vote with 54.04% of the ballots cast.
