What happened in Texas, 1932

In 1932, Texas awarded its 23 electoral votes to Roosevelt of the Democratic party. That placed Texas with the eventual winner: Franklin D. Roosevelt went on to take the presidency, and Texas was part of his column.

The result flipped Texas away from the Republican it had supported in 1928. Texas did not move alone — neighboring New Mexico, Oklahoma, Arkansas, and Louisiana broke the same way in 1932. Over its 44 recorded presidential cycles, Texas has backed the Democratic party more than any other — 28 times in all. The vote fell within the New Deal Coalition — FDR, civil rights, and the long Democratic majority.

Nationally, Franklin D. Roosevelt finished with 472 of the 531 electoral votes to Herbert Hoover's 59. Franklin D. Roosevelt led the national popular vote with 57.41% of the ballots cast.
