Texas in 1916

The 1916 contest saw Texas line up behind Wilson, delivering 20 electoral votes to the Democratic ticket. That placed Texas with the eventual winner: Woodrow Wilson went on to take the presidency, and Texas was part of his column.

Texas stayed in the Democratic column for the 12th straight cycle, extending a run that began in 1872. Texas did not move alone — neighboring New Mexico, Oklahoma, Arkansas, and Louisiana broke the same way in 1916. Over its 44 recorded presidential cycles, Texas has backed the Democratic party more than any other — 28 times in all. The vote fell within the Progressive Era — Trust-busting, suffrage, and World War I.

Nationally, Woodrow Wilson finished with 277 of the 531 electoral votes to Charles Evans Hughes's 254. Woodrow Wilson led the national popular vote with 49.24% of the ballots cast.
