What happened in California, 1912

In 1912, California awarded its 13 electoral votes to Roosevelt of the Progressive party. The presidency went elsewhere: Woodrow Wilson (Democratic) won nationally, while California had backed a different ticket.

The result flipped California away from the Republican ticket it had backed in each of the previous 4 cycles. It stood apart from its neighbors: Oregon, Nevada, and Arizona went the other way that year. Over its 44 recorded presidential cycles, California has backed the Republican party more than any other — 22 times in all. The vote fell within the Progressive Era — Trust-busting, suffrage, and World War I.

Nationally, Woodrow Wilson finished with 435 of the 531 electoral votes to Theodore Roosevelt's 88. Woodrow Wilson led the national popular vote with 41.84% of the ballots cast.
