Ohio in 1852

The 1852 contest saw Ohio line up behind Pierce, delivering 23 electoral votes to the Democratic ticket. That placed Ohio with the eventual winner: Franklin Pierce went on to take the presidency, and Ohio was part of his column.

The result flipped Ohio away from the Whig ticket it had backed in each of the previous 4 cycles. The region divided — Michigan, Indiana, and Pennsylvania joined Ohio for the Democratic ticket, while Kentucky did not. Over its 56 recorded presidential cycles, Ohio has backed the Republican party more than any other — 30 times in all. The vote fell within the Second Party System — Jackson, Whigs, and the rise of mass politics.

Nationally, Franklin Pierce finished with 254 of the 296 electoral votes to Winfield Scott's 42. Franklin Pierce led the national popular vote with 50.83% of the ballots cast.
