1836
Reading the 1836 result in Ohio
Ohio backed Harrison (Whig) in the 1836 presidential election, casting 21 electoral votes for the ticket. The presidency went elsewhere: Martin Van Buren (Democratic) won nationally, while Ohio had backed a different ticket.
The result flipped Ohio away from the Democratic ticket it had backed in each of the previous 2 cycles. The region divided — Kentucky joined Ohio for the Whig ticket, while Michigan, Indiana, and Pennsylvania did not. Over its 56 recorded presidential cycles, Ohio has backed the Republican party more than any other — 30 times in all. The vote fell within the Second Party System — Jackson, Whigs, and the rise of mass politics.
Nationally, Martin Van Buren finished with 170 of the 294 electoral votes to William Henry Harrison's 73. Martin Van Buren led the national popular vote with 50.79% of the ballots cast.
