In 1832, Ohio awarded its 21 electoral votes to Jackson of the Democratic party. That placed Ohio with the eventual winner: Andrew Jackson went on to take the presidency, and Ohio was part of his column.

Ohio stayed in the Democratic column for the 2nd straight cycle, extending a run that began in 1828. The region divided — Michigan, Indiana, and Pennsylvania joined Ohio for the Democratic ticket, while Kentucky did not. Over its 56 recorded presidential cycles, Ohio has backed the Republican party more than any other — 30 times in all.
