In 1868, Ohio awarded its 21 electoral votes to Grant of the Republican party. Ohio ended up on the winning side — Ulysses S. Grant captured the White House that year.

It marked the 4th consecutive election in which Ohio backed the Republican party, a streak reaching back to 1856. The region divided — Michigan, West Virginia, and Pennsylvania joined Ohio for the Republican ticket, while Indiana and Kentucky did not.
