2016
What happened in Washington, 2016
In 2016, Washington awarded its 12 electoral votes to Clinton of the Democratic party. The presidency went elsewhere: Donald Trump (Republican) won nationally, while Washington had backed a different ticket.
Washington stayed in the Democratic column for the 8th straight cycle, extending a run that began in 1988. The region divided — Oregon joined Washington for the Democratic ticket, while Idaho did not. Over its 34 recorded presidential cycles, Washington has backed the Democratic party more than any other — 19 times in all. The vote fell within the Modern Polarization — Close elections in a divided country.
Nationally, Donald Trump finished with 304 of the 538 electoral votes to Hillary Clinton's 227. Though Donald Trump won the Electoral College, Hillary Clinton drew more of the national popular vote — 48.18% to 46.09%.
